In all populations, significant differences are observed in the health status of people with and without functional limitations. In this regard, it is necessary to guarantee the right of people with disabilities to an independent and healthy lifestyle and to eliminate any type of barrier that prevents equal opportunities.
In Mozambique, and in Maputo in particular, despite initial progress such as the approval of Law 10/2024, on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the reality is that people with disabilities suffer serious and constant discrimination in their daily lives, limiting their right to the city.
The project, conceived as a second phase of consolidating the intervention initiated in 2023, is being implemented by Medicus Mundi Mediterrània in collaboration with the Maputo Municipal Council and a new partner, the Forum of Mozambican Associations of People with Disabilities (FAMOD). It will develop a cross-cutting municipal policy, strengthen the healthcare network around the Xipamanine Health Centre, and carry out advocacy and awareness-raising activities to improve the quality of life for residents. The Barcelona Municipal Institute for People with Disabilities will provide advisory services.
