Strengthening PHC Promotion of PHC

Investment in initial and ongoing training is fundamental to strengthening the National Healthcare System.

The Cabo Delgado Provincial Healthcare Sector held a graduation ceremony on December 18 for new healthcare professionals trained in various clinical areas at the Pemba’s Institute of Health Sciences. The event took place at the Alberto Chipande’s Teacher Training Institute, and medicusmundi, represented by its coordinator, participated in the diploma award ceremony.

A total of 413 new healthcare professionals graduated, including “community” health workers and two new classes of Maternal and Child Health Nurses. It is worth noting that 15 of these new professionals completed three years of training in Maternal and Child Health (MCH), with financial support from the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), within the framework of Agreement 22-CO1-398, implemented by medicusmundi in Cabo Delgado during the period 2023-2026. To carry out this initiative, a collaboration agreement was established with the Pemba’s Institute of Health Sciences, which not only provided training for these new professionals in Maternal and Child Health, but also facilitated the pre-employment of two of these students during the final year of the program, thus contributing to the direct strengthening of health services at the district level, specifically in the districts of Ancuabe and Namuno.

This action aligns with the strategic guidelines of the Health Sector to strengthen universal health coverage, responding to the need to increase the number of qualified professionals in health facilities, especially in priority areas such as maternal and child health.

The graduation of these new professionals is especially relevant, given the persistent challenges related to the shortage of human resources in the health sector in Cabo Delgado. Investment in initial and ongoing training is fundamental to strengthening the National Healthcare System, contributing to more resilient, equitable, and community-oriented services, in line with the priorities of the Ministry of Health, the Provincial Health Directorate (DPS), and the Cabo Delgado Health Service (SPS), as well as cooperation partners.

This activity is part of the AECID Agreement 22-CO1-398 “Improving the quality, coverage, and resilience of the Cabo Delgado healthcare system”, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and implemented by medicusmundi, in collaboration with the Cabo Delgado healthcare sector.
