Reflecting on gender stereotypes and sexist behaviours.

Between July 16 and September 3, 2025, several awareness-raising talks on Gender-Based Violence and New Masculinities were given in four secondary schools in Maputo.

The talks were given at the “Heróis Moçambicanos,” “Infulene-Benfica,” “Mubukwane,” and “Malhazine” secondary schools, with the participation of 509 students. The sessions were led by the national police through the Office for Assistance to Families and Minors Victims of Violence, Associação Hixikanwe, Rede HOPEM, and medicusmundi.

During the sessions, topics such as the Human Rights of Women and Girls, Gender Equality, mechanisms for preventing and reporting Gender-Based Violence, and the promotion of New Masculinities were addressed.

Different participatory methodologies were used to foster open dialogue and encourage students to reflect on gender stereotypes, sexist behaviours, and their role in combating Gender-Based Violence and adopting Positive Masculinities.

Furthermore, pre- and post-session assessments were administered to the participating students, revealing a significant improvement in their level of knowledge and perception regarding new masculinities and the role of men as allies in violence prevention.

This activity is part of the project “Consolidating exit routes from gender-based violence in Maputo (Mozambique)”, funded by the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD) and implemented by medicusmundi, in collaboration with Associação Hixikanwe and Fórum Mulher.
