Television Debate with the Maputo Social Determinants of Health Commission

On September 22, 2023, the Municipal Commission for Social Determinants of Health of the City of Maputo held a television debate, on the StrongLive channel, about the challenges in accessing information and reliable data on cases of gender-based violence.

Social Determinants of Health

The voice of the community: WHY REPORT IF YOU NEVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE AGGRESSOR?

With this debate, the aim was to mobilize and raise awareness in the community to reflect on possible solutions to combat GBV.

Among the various aspects addressed during the debate, the lesser involvement of some of the actors involved in the fight against GBV stood out, such as, for example, the PRM, which does not always provide the most appropriate follow-up to reported cases and complaints made at the police station level.

The voice of the community: WHY REPORT IF YOU NEVER DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE AGGRESSOR?

Society needs to know that violence is a public crime and that anyone can report it and that they must also know the different entry points: in the health sector, hospitals and health centres; at the police level, the police stations and offices that assist families and minors who are victims of violence; but also the Attorney General's Office and the Social Action sector.

During the television debate, an appeal was made for these entrance doors to be more functional and for the existence of green lines and for complaints and suggestions books to be available at reception. Processes of gender-based violence must be attended to or resolved with priority, always giving quick responses, in accordance with the Law. It is important that society and the public and private system are engaged, so that the work is harmonious.

And, in this sense, the role of the media in disseminating correct information deserves to be highlighted. To this end, it is important to make lectures disseminating information and the Law more widespread, producing announcements in the media (television and radio), or distributing pamphlets with clear messages. As mentioned in the debate, “we need to move masses and shout for help to be heard and responded to.” That is, we must trust and use the media as one of the mechanisms that help to take information across borders, but also to disseminate reliable and useful information for citizens.
