Strengthening PHC Promotion of PHC Advocacy for PHC

Prevention, preparedness, and response to health emergencies.

The Emergency Health Management Course was held on December 15, 16, and 17 at the Pemba Institute of Health Sciences, with 20 participants, 50% of whom were women. Participants included professors from the Institute of Health Sciences, members of the Cabo Delgado Provincial Health Directorate (DPS), and the Provincial Health Service (DPS), thus strengthening the link between training, management, and the provision of healthcare services.

The course was delivered by the medicusmundi technical team, with the support of two expert trainers in Preventive Health from the DPS and the SPS and promoted the strengthening of technical and institutional competencies in the prevention, preparedness, and response to health emergencies.

The training covered essential content on health emergency management, with an emphasis on multi-hazard management, through the application of the STAR tool (Strategic Tool for Analysis of Risks), developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). This tool allows the health sector to conduct a strategic risk assessment associated with multiple threats, such as floods or epidemics, facilitating more effective planning and a coordinated response, identifying vulnerabilities, and optimizing resource allocation, thus contributing to the building of resilient health systems.

The completion of this course represents an important step in strengthening the capacities of human resources in the health sector, equipping them with essential knowledge and tools for the prevention, preparedness, and response to health emergencies. Investing in the continuing education of healthcare professionals is essential to increasing the resilience of the healthcare system and improving its capacity to respond to the various risks and challenges affecting public health in Cabo Delgado.

This activity is part of the AECID Agreement 22-CO1-398, “Improving the quality, coverage, and resilience of the Cabo Delgado healthcare system”, implemented by medicusmundi in collaboration with the Mozambique National Health System and funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), with co-financing from the Mallorcan Solidarity and Cooperation Fund and the Catalan municipalities of Granollers, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and Sant Cugat del Vallès.
