Cabo Delgado Strengthens Breastfeeding Promotion Through Community Actions in Ancuabe and Namuno
World Breastfeeding Week was celebrated in the districts of Ancuabe and Namuno, with the support of the Spanish Cooperation Agency.

As part of World Breastfeeding Week, medicusmundi carried out awareness-raising activities in the districts of Ancuabe and Namuno, in the province of Cabo Delgado, on August 3, 6, and 7, 2026, with the aim of strengthening community knowledge about the importance of exclusive and complementary breastfeeding until at least two years of age.
The activities were developed around the theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2026: Strengthening what works for a sustainable start in life, combining talks with community theatre to bring health messages to the communities and promote spaces for dialogue and learning.
The activities reinforced messages about the early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, and its continuation alongside appropriate complementary feeding. The importance of the father and family in the care and upbringing of the baby, as well as in supporting the mother to maintain breastfeeding, was also highlighted.
In Ancuabe, activities were held in Metoro and Nacololo, with the participation of the Makhalelo Theatre Group; while in Namuno, activities took place at the Namuno Health Centre and the Meloco Health Centre, where the Ephiro Worera Yomilipone Theatre Group presented a play about breastfeeding. The activities were carried out in collaboration with the respective SDSMAS (Health, Women, and Social Action Services) and their nutrition technicians.
The use of community theatre strengthened existing practices in the communities, valuing local resources and knowledge and promoting greater shared responsibility among mothers, fathers, families, and the community in the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding.
These activities are part of the efforts to promote maternal and child health and strengthen community participation, contributing to a healthy and sustainable start in life for the children of Cabo Delgado.
