Medicus Mundi celebrate World Environment Day in Mozambique

Every year since 1972, World Environment Day has been celebrated on June 5th. And this year, on the 50th anniversary of this commemoration, medicusmundi and Centro Terra Viva (CTV) join the Provincial Directorate of Territorial Development and Environment (DPDTA) of Cabo Delgado (Mozambique) in programming activities for this day, under the motto "One Earth united by climate resilience".

For this 50th anniversary, the district of Ancuabe was chosen as the epicenter of the ceremonies on the 5th of June. But throughout the month of June, various awareness-raising activities will take place, taking advantage of other significant dates: the 8th of June, Oceans Day, and the 17th of June, World Day to Combat Drought and Desertification.

In this way, this Provincial Directorate, with the support of local and international organizations, prepared a program of activities in Cabo Delgado, which includes cleaning sessions and waste collection in public areas (markets, squares, beaches, cemeteries...), but also lectures on environmental education in schools and communities, dissemination of environmental messages through radio or tree planting, among others.

On Sunday, June 5th, medicusmundi, together with CTV, were present at the commemoration of World Environment Day in the District of Ancuabe, having made available to visitors a sample of educational material prepared by these organizations within the scope of projects to dignify mining artisanal activities that they implement in Cabo Delgado. These materials promote sustainable artisanal mining techniques, without the use of contaminating products, as well as good conservation and environmental protection practices.

Furthermore, medicusmundi would like to take this opportunity to invite all readers to reflect on the role of artisanal mining in environmental protection; and, at the same time, publish a scientific article on artisanal mining in Namuno, a district where MM and CTV have been working since 2017 to promote environmentally responsible mining techniques and practices: https://authors.elsevier.com/a/ 1f75l,oMyQRddI
